The thing is, the debate isn't going to change the outcome of the election.
If Goddard ends up winning, commentators will point at the debates, but
they'll be missing the simple fact that Arizons already knew that Brewer is
a loon, and have since she was in the State Legislature. That didn't stop
them from electing her Secretary of State, and it won't necessarily stop
them from electing her Governor. Politically, Arizona is a very strange
and dysfunctional animal. The Republicans are in the clear majority,
they've controlled the Legislature since WW2, and Arizona elects Democrat
Governors more often than Republican Governors (note that Brewer wasn't
elected Governor).
In all, Az has had 22 state Governors, 13 Dems and 9 Repubs. 6 Secretaries
of Stateumed the Governship when their Governors didn't finish their
term, and one Atty Generalumed the Governorship whe the Governor died
and the SoS wasn't eligible (a chain thing; Raul Castro resigned to become
Ambassador to Mexico, Wes Bolin, the SoS replaced him, with hisistant
Rose Mofford replaing him as SoS, only for Bolin to die in office, and
Mofford be ineligible because she was appointed, not elected). The Atty
Gen and 4 of the SoSs were Dems, 2 SoSs were Repubs
People who were going to vote for Brewer before these debates are still
going to vote for after them. If her behavior in the Legislature, and her
behavior as SoS didn't stop them, these debates won't since she acting the
same way. History says her chances are good. Of the 7 people who replaced
Governors who didn't finish their term, only one was not subseuently
elected Governor.
