Fareed Rahman speaks with a former friend of Dubai’s mosque
murderer about the loner who became a killer

The monster who has been senten-ced to death for raping and
murdering a four-year-old boy in a Dubai mosque was a lonely man
with a history of violence, one of his friends told 7DAYS.

Mohammed Khalifa, who had been friends with killer Rashid Al-
Rashidi for 20 years, said he wanted to chop his former pal into
little pieces after hearing of his horrendous crime.

Khalifa, who said that Al-Rashidi would regularly play with his
children and take them to the supermarket, said: “He was a good
friend of mine but I cannot forgive him for what he has done. It
is unacceptable.

“I never expected he would do such a terrible thing even though
he had been convicted for various offences in the past. He was
deprived of love and affection growing up.”

Al-Rashidi’s criminal record stretches back to 1996. He has ten
previous convictions including .,ault, robbery and theft.
He had been jailed for three years for the . and had only
been released from prison in 2008.

Khalifa, who had served with Al-Rashidi in the army and lives
just a few doors along from him in Al Qusais, said his pal had
gone astray as he was starved of love and began mixing with a
bad crowd.

“He fell into the company of the wrong people. I always advised
him to marry and settle down but he would not listen to me. He
has carried out the most heinous crime in the world,” he said.
He continued: “He used to behave in a violent way for no reason
and was known for creating a scene.

I remember that a few days before the incident he got very drunk
and started acting violently. He really scared some of his
friends. He is mentally sick.”

Al-Rashidi had, however, been exam-ined by three psycologists
from Rashid Hospital who carried out a number of tests on him
over five hours.

They spent an hour questioning him in an isolated room and then
conducted a series of psychological tests before determining
that he been in control of his actions on the day he lured Moosa
into the toilet of the mosque and .d and killed him.

“He is normal and responsible for his acts,” one of the doctors
Mohammad Hassan said. “He showed violence during the
psychological tests and also he has a homo.ual desire for
little children.”

He added: “He likes watching films of youngsters being .d.”

Khalifa who, like, Al-Rashidi is a fisherman, added: “He could
have led a comfortable life and ventured into the sea to catch
fish and earn money. Instead he chose to waste all this.”

Al-Rashidi had visited Khalifa’s home just a day before he
murdered Moosa to ask for money to buy new clothes for Eid but
he was out at sea.

“I went to his home the next day to give him money but he was
not there. I tried to call him on his mobile, but there was no
response.”

He added: “It was only the next day that I found out that he had
been arrested for raping and murdering a boy. I was shocked.”

When giving evidence Al-Rashidi had told Dubai Court of First
Instance: “I didn’t intend to kill the boy but I forced him to
have . with me.

“He was yelling while I was raping him and I heard someone
coming to the bathroom so I covered his mouth with my hands, but
he continued to yell and so I decided to kill him.”

Khalifa and Al-Rashidi both attended an Arabic school in Al
Qusais.

“He studied up to fifth grade at school and lost his father when
he was very young. He has a step-mother who he lived with in
Dubai and a sister who lives in Bahrain. He has been very lonely
since he was a small kid. Loneliness destroyed him as a human
being,” Khalifa said.

‘We don’t want to be haunted by the past’
Moosa’s father told 7DAYS that the death sentence for his son’s
killer will help his family move on with their lives.

Mukhthar Ahmed Khudabakhsh, said he wanted to provide a good
education for his other two children and move forward together.

“I am left with only two children after Moosa’s murder. My wish
is to provide them with a good education and give them a good
life. Though I am poor I will work hard to enroll them in a good
school,” he said.

The family are also intending to move home. “Moosa’s memories
will haunt us if we continue to stay in the same house. We are
looking for a new house to move to shortly,” he said.

Moosa’s family have asked to witness the execution of his
murderer. “The public prosecution responded positively to our
request and we are hoping to be present during the execution,”
he said.

Though the family is content with the verdict, they are still
having a tough time coping with their loss.

Mukhthar said that his wife still cries at night as she
remembers Moosa.

“There has not been a single day when she has not cried. Despite
my best efforts to comfort her, she continues to cry. It is a
very difficult time for us,” he said.
