CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Calling the market upheaval one of the most
serious in the nation’s history, Barack Obama said Friday that the
Treasury and the Federal Reserve must receive “as broad authority as
necessary” to restore stability to the financial system.

Following a meeting with economic advisers here, Obama said he
supports efforts by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal
Reserve Chairman Benjamin Bernanke to work with Congress on a rescue
plan.

“I'm much less interested at this point in scoring political points,
than I am in making sure that we have a structure in place that is
sound and that is actually going to work,” Obama told reporters. “What
we don't want to do is get too bogged down in some complicated
legislative wrangling. There's going to be a lot of time for us to be
in a big argument about how some of these future plans should be
structured.”
