Nah. When the first wave of McCain-insider Palin-bashing stories hit
the wires, I took a cynical look at what was behind it. Right away I
tripped over a clip of Bill O'Reilly staunchly defending her in
response to a feed from a _Fox_ reporter giving air to the smears. Now
sure, bilging Sarah Cheesecake may be a Reep internecine spat--although
I'm still thinking it's mostly insider payback for her virulent (and
amateur) bitchery...and for those dittoheads who believe Nicholle
Wallace is the saint herein, pffft!, you're dreaming.
It's a factional (and personal) fight, not a concerted effort by the
party elite to purge her. Of course you're right that Palin working
the hustings could result in a GOP disaster in '012--and possibly screw
with their Senate retrenchment hopes in 2010. I'm sure that there are
some key movers in the fiscal conservative wing of the party who have
already concluded that she's a .ing albatross who must be quickly
squelched. But I don't think they have the power to extirpate her so
easily, or can have that power again without fracturing the GOP.
Like it or not the Randites and brutalist anti-tax extremists have lain
themselves down with the snake-handlers and there ain't no gettin' up
all virgin again. They are stuck with them that brung 'em this far.
To wit, if Grover Norquist is aghast at the clip of Guv Swimsuit Honey
having her demons cast out by the laying on of hands, welp, he can pour
himself a stiff Scotch and pray to Adam Smith for deliverance, 'cuz he
ain't got no other options.
Look, if the Norquist wing truly held sway over the Reeps, Mitt Romney
would have been their nominee. Except for his inconvenient Mormonism,
he was Their Hero. And yet Huckabee beat that boy flat.
